15 Tater Tot “Hot Dish” Recipes

Here in Iowa, we call this dish “tater tot casserole.” However, in Minnesota, they call it  tater tot ” Hot Dish.”

“Hot Dish” originates in the Upper Midwest, particularly Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, and remains a popular dinner staple in those states.

The history of Minnesota ” Hotdish” goes back to budget-conscious wives during the 1930s,  looking for ways to feed their families and other members of their Lutheran churches.  The Hotdish got its start in church basements.  A hot dish is traditionally found at Midwest funerals, potlucks, and church suppers.

Although “Hotdish” might be made with various grains, “tater tot casserole” has become a dish in its own right.   Tatertot casserole is an easy, comforting budget-friendly way to stretch your leftovers from the night before.
